Important Lesson
After everything that had happened, a gnome in front of me started to fidget nervously like he'd come to realize he was going to likely be one of those whose blood would be spilled.
The number she quoted meant more than half of those present wouldn't make it. Half would die horribly.
"If you don't have power, or a means to achieve it, quit now!" The Headmistress pointed her whip towards the back of the crowd, and another portal shimmered open.
"Last chance. Anyone I have to remove in the future for weakness or cowardice leaves my Academy bound for a bone pit!"
She gave her ultimatum to the group one last time. "So those that want to quit, leave! There is no shame in admitting you're a little bitch now rather than wasting my time and a training slot."
Several monsters walked into the portal before it snapped closed and disappeared behind them. I couldn't even make out where the portal had been before. It was like it had just blinked out of existence.
She returned her attention to the group of monsters that remained. "If you're not leaving, then I want to welcome you to your first challenge. Your task is simple, prove that you belong here."
"Or die on these sands. You decide."
Even more of the crowd walked away. This time wicked grin stretched across her face. "Look at them go, always the cowards who hurry to run away!" she called out, her voice dripping with scorn.
"Good riddance to the quitters. They wouldn't last a day here anyway. No guts, no glory, and NO BALLS. No balls, you hear me!"
Once the last of the deserters had vanished from sight, the Headmistress turned back toward us, her fiery gaze sweeping over the lines of prospects who had chosen to stay.
Her whip cracked.
"We will start by marching over to the battle arena." The demoness declared, gesturing behind her with the whip.
"Group. Attention!"
I knew what she meant, but there was a look of confusion through most of the group. I instantly snapped to the right, my previous life's military training kicking in. Muscle memory, ingrained from countless drills, took over.
I glanced around and couldn't help but smirk at the sight. Confusion rippled through the group like a wave.
These monsters and demi humans, with all their brute strength and power, had no idea what to do.
"For fuck's sake, that mean's stand up straight, and turn to the right. We're leaving. Let's try again. Right face. Turn the fuck to the right!"
The Headmistress waved her whip to the right and everyone turned, including me.
"Right face. Move!"
There was a sudden lurch of movement as most of the assembled academy prospects turned, bumping into each other and pushing off of one another while a few of the more powerful assembled simply created their own space by force of will that others had to respect.
One of them, a massive minotaur, began to walk forward and stepped on a tiny demon, more mouse than imp. Whether from indifference or he didn't see, the single step left a greasy smear on the ground.
